GST reward scheme on anvil; customers can participate in lucky draw

Individuals could soon receive rewards for submitting GST invoices through a mobile app, as the government is on the verge of launching the eagerly awaited ‘Mera Bill Mera Adhikar’ GST reward scheme.

According to sources, under the invoice incentivization program, individuals who upload invoices from retailers or wholesalers onto the app could stand a chance to win cash prizes ranging from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 1 crore on a monthly or quarterly basis.

The mobile app ‘Mera Bill Mera Adhikar’ will be accessible on both iOS and Android platforms. The uploaded invoices on the app must include details such as the seller’s GSTIN, invoice number, paid amount, and tax sum. Each individual is permitted to upload up to 25 valid invoices per month, provided the invoice reflects a minimum purchase value of Rs 200, as disclosed by an official.

Over 500 computerized lucky draws are planned each month, with the prize amounts potentially reaching lakhs of rupees. Additionally, there will be two lucky draws held quarterly, where the prize sum could be as high as Rs 1 crore, as stated by officials. The scheme is currently being finalized and could be introduced as early as this month.

In a bid to combat GST evasion, the government has previously mandated electronic invoices for B2B transactions surpassing an annual turnover of Rs 5 crore. The ‘Mera Bill Mera Adhikar’ GST reward scheme aims to extend electronic invoice generation to B2C customers, thus enabling buyers to be eligible for participation in the lucky draws.

The scheme’s design is rooted in the idea of motivating citizens and consumers to request genuine invoices from sellers during business-to-consumer (B2C) transactions that fall under the scope of the Goods and Services Tax. Its primary goal is to encourage tax-compliant behavior among consumers and businesses throughout India’s B2C transactions.

The technology platform for this initiative has been developed by the GST Network (GSTN). This user-friendly mobile application and portal enable citizens to register and upload invoices with ease.

This comprehensive scheme is anticipated to achieve several objectives, including incentivizing and rewarding compliance among consumers, promoting tax-compliant businesses, boosting consumer spending, and curbing tax evasion.
